Give the Gift of Food

It can be hard to come up with the right present for someone, but one thing that everyone loves is food. Whip up some holiday goodies for a heart-felt homemade gift, make a compilation of your all-time favourite recipes, or write down some precious memories of you and them cooking together. A gift from the heart is always appreciated, and as the saying goes, “The best way to a person’s heart is through their stomach”!

Don’t be Afraid to use those Fancy Holiday Dishes

Whether they’re bright seasonal colours or decorated with fun holiday designs, your plates and dishes can add something unique to traditional decorations that will turn any meal into a festive feast! Reds, greens, purples, and blues will bring some of the winter season to your table and will have your guests feeling the joyous holiday spirit.

Add Some Colour to your Table

One of the best parts of the holiday season is all of the beautiful colours, so don’t be afraid to bring those stunning hues to your table. Light colours such as blues, whites, and greys with pops of dark colours like cranberry, forest green, and plum purple will make the winter season come to life.

Bake Some Tasty Holiday Treats

Shortbread cookies, gingerbread houses, eggnog cheesecake, chocolate fudge, powdered snowballs, the list goes on. Whipping up those holiday treats can be a fun activity for kids and parents to do together, not to mention you’ll create some lasting memories that you’ll cherish for years.  Food is a big part of our holidays and we all know good food equals happy people. So make sure you stock up on Neal Brothers goodies before any holiday party – people will be raving about the food until next December!

Give Back to Others

Last but certainly not least (in fact it’s one of the most important), spend some time giving back to the less fortunate to remind yourself and your children of the real meaning of the holidays. Canadian Food Centres Canada offers plenty of volunteering opportunities and is committed to providing healthy food to build good health and strengthen communities. This holiday season check out CFCC’s website (http://cfccanada.ca/)  to see how you can give back. You’ll realize how much you truly have to be thankful for all while spreading some joy to those who could use it most.

So, get out there and spread that holiday cheer – with these tips you’ll be ready for the holidays before you know it. Seasons greetings!

How long have you been at Neal Brothers and what do you do here?

I am coming up to ten years in the spring. I am the sales director for all of Québec. I do a little of everything from sales, account management, brand management, marketing, consumer relations, HR,  the list goes on and on.

Why do you love working for Neal Brothers?

It’s a very family oriented company, I love that. The brothers and my fellow colleagues have become family over the years, I cannot imagine working anywhere else.

Also the FOOD, I love food and working for a company that believes in ‘really tasty’ and ‘good for you’ products is where I was meant to be.

Tell us one of your favourite stories from working for Neal Brothers.

The absolute best thing has been to be able (or given the trust from Neal Brothers) to choose/ hire the most perfect individuals and build a dream team. These folks aren’t just co-workers but personal friends that get together for all kind if activities outside of working hours.

What would you say is the most adventurous thing you have ever done?

I was 19 or 20 and I didn’t have a job at the time so friends and I drove to Florida for an extended vacation. I got a job serving in a restaurant and one of the other employees asked if I wanted to make some extra money. I thought ‘of course’ and somehow got myself involved in a group called ‘battle of the sexes” where males and females would wrestle in full costume for people to bet on.

Wow, really?

Yes, I even had a stage name ‘Natasha from Russia’. I actually had a superfan that wrote me a letter once. I might even still have the letter somewhere.

group 1

What’s your day off look like?

Spending time with my two boys, Julian and Henri. I am a full-fledged soccer mom and proud of it. I’m even thinking of joining a woman’s’ soccer league next summer. I drive a Neal Brothers branded car, wrapped in potato chip graphics but on the inside it’s just full of kid’s sports equipment.

We are a pretty active family and I love to jog and go for hikes, enjoying this country’s beautiful landscapes.

What’s your Goodness?

Every year at this time, I have my boys go through their things and pick out toys that they would like to pass along to someone who might like it. Our local fire department holds a used toy drive and the boys will take their gently used toys over to them for donation.

Personally my ‘goodness’ is doing anything I can to help my friends and community, mostly based around food…since that’s what I love most. Whenever one of my friends is sick or their kids are ill I will bring over a home cooked meal to help out. I have also done this for all my friends when they first brought home their newborns.

Where is your favourite place to wine/dine in your city and why?

Well for me it’s wherever my loved ones are. My girlfriends and I always take advantage of MTL à Table. This is like Toronto’s Winterlicious where you can take advantage of Montreal’s best restaurant for a fraction of the cost.

As for the ‘wine’ part. I will go anywhere that Freddie James Project is playing, usually at the Calistoga Grill near my house. They are a jazz/blues/R&B cover band that gets everyone up dancing.

fam2r

What’s your favourite Neal Brothers product and how do you eat it?

Pink Himalayan Salt popcorn is our family’s favourite. The four of us will hit the couch with our Neal Brother’s popcorn and a classic film, like Forrest Gump – even my 4 year old loves this one.

What would be your last meal? (Don’t hold back)

My mom would have to cook, she is my favourite chef! A filet mignon with mushrooms and onions, some turnip, buttered green beans and a nice glass of merlot. Also some of my mom’s incredible apple crumble…with a scoop of ice cream of course!

Meet Paul;

How long have you been at Neal Brothers and what do you do here?

13 years this October and I am the VP/GM of Operations.

And what does that mean exactly?

Well I do many things from accounts receivable and inventory flow to logistics and warehouse manager but am also a general manager to most of the staff in the office. I wear many hats

Why do you love working for Neal Brothers?

For the most part, I love the people I work with. In my opinion, that’s the most important thing. Surround yourself with good people and it will never feel like work.

My family owned an IGA in King City so I grew up in the grocery world.

I just love working in the food industry and seeing the new inventive products hitting the shelves.

Any other reasons?

I prefer working for a family run business than a publically traded company for many different reasons. The main one being that we can address problems right away and make changes quickly.

Most importantly, Peter and Chris Neal create a real team atmosphere. It feels like working with family.

Paul's brother, Paul and his best friend.

Paul’s brother Mike, Paul and his best friend 1992.

Outside of work, what would you say was something that lead you to where you are now?

I coached hockey for years.  Mostly Peewee (13-14 year olds). When I was coaching they made some significant changes to the rep leagues in Ontario. Zone triple A was formed which brought the best of certain areas onto one team.  You have to remember that these were kids that were used to playing against each other and were now forced to play on the same team.

It really tested my leadership skills but we came together and managed to win the OMHA championships, and a few other major tournaments.

It’s very cool to look back on. I was only 23 when I was coaching and now these kids have all grown up. Some ended up playing professionally and some just went on to have amazing careers both in and out of sports.

It really did set me up to becoming more of a leader inside and outside my career.

What’s your day off look like?

Sleep! Haha. No, really it is mostly spending time with girlfriend Joanna and  my 4 kids. I also love to mountain bike and play tennis when I get a chance.

One of my favourite things to do is explore Ontario’s small towns and try to find the best restaurants, festivals and trails that this province has to offer.

family

What’s your Goodness?

I always support cancer research fundraisers both local and national. Like many of us, we have had too many close relatives affected by the disease.

My kids are heavily involved in Relay for Life and I try to support as much as I can.

I still try to stay involved with local sports.

Where is your favourite place to wine/dine in your city and why?

There are so many it’s hard to choose.

We love the Peter Cellar’s Pub at the Mono Cliff Inn, it’s this cozy and intimate place in the middle of nowhere. The food is amazing.

We also love McCarty’s and Land and Fire in Caledon.

It’s so fun to discover these places tucked inside our small towns.

What’s your favourite Neal Brothers product and how do you eat it?

I would have to say corn salsa and blue corn tortillas with flax. I will never pass up a good nacho plate!

What would be your last meal? (Don’t hold back)

A huge steak with a side of back ribs, throw on a shrimp skewer or two. Wash that down with a cold import lager or local craft beer and finish off with a slice of chocolate cake a la mode (make it chocolate).

Meet Karen;

Hey Karen, how long have you been at Neal Brothers and what do you do here?

Two years ago I started on order desk as a seasonal employee and this past January began my full time role as a MCB and pricing administrator

In Lehman’s Terms?

In short, I keep track of budgets and manage retail promotions with some brand management thrown in there.

What is the most memorable milestone in your career so far?

While working at The Stop’s Night Market in 2015 I ate the most incredible waffle.

SA7

What would you say is the most adventurous thing you have ever done?

In 2014 I spent 2 months in Peru completing my final University internship. I fell in love with South America and went back in 2015, backpacking my way across the continent for 4 months. I climbed Machu Picchu for the second time, went whale watching in Ecuador, ate my weight in steak in Argentina, and spent 3 days on the salt flats in Bolivia.

travel collage

What’s your day off look like?

Spending time at my friend’s farm with our dogs or more recently throwing axes at a target in a league. I am also training for a half marathon in October.

What’s your Goodness?

I volunteer at Dog Tales. A rescue centre just outside of Newmarket

SA5

What do you do there?

I walk, play and snuggle with dogs that are waiting for their ‘forever homes’

Where is your favourite place to wine/dine in your city and why?

Joia, an Italian eatery in Aurora, ON. They have THE MOST delicious thin crust pizza.

What’s your favourite Neal Brothers product and how do you eat it?

Srirachup kettle chips…and to answer the second part, the entire bag at once.

What would be your last meal? and don’t hold back.

A giant bowl of mashed potatoes and the biggest, rarest steak.
